Staffordshire based farmer, Rob Greenow, has been shortlisted in the ‘Young Farmer of the Year’ category for this year’s Farmers Weekly awards, after successfully establishing his own AD business and investing back into his future in farming.
Rob has combined his farming experience with an interest in renewable energy to create his own AD management business, establish his own AD plant, and purchase an arable farm in the past 18 months – all by the age of 29.
“Upon leaving university I sought out a position within the AD industry for two years, before leaving to establish BioG UK. Initially the purpose of the business was to partner with farmers to support them through the feasibility and planning stages of an AD plant,” says Rob.
“However, after two years I shifted the business’ focus to concentrate on helping other AD plant owners to troubleshoot and operate plants on their behalf,” he adds.
“And, in Spring 2016, as a result of the success of my business venture, I completed the purchase of my own 162 acre arable farm. Around a similar time, months’ worth of planning came off with the development of my own 249kW AD plant on a friends farm just down the road.”
Rob explains how his relationship with his funding provider Privilege Finance, who also recommended him for the award, has been pivotal in enabling him to realise his ambition.
“Finance for the £1.9m project was secured in May 2016 through Privilege Finance and the plant was installed during the summer and quickly commissioned thereafter,” says Rob.
“It’s been a very busy and challenging couple of years but I wouldn’t change any of it and I’m really looking forward to the future,” he adds.
“I’m absolutely honoured to have been shortlisted for such a prestigious award and believe that I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of so many people.
“I’d like to thank my business partners, JA Wilcox at Batchacre Hall Farm for their involvement, Privilege Finance for offering me funding and trusting in my expertise, as well as my other half Katie for helping me and putting up with the stress.”
